Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette: Adding sunshine to a grey day

Anastacia Beverly Hills Subculture Eye Shadow Palette

When times get tough, you should “pour yourself a drink, put on some lipstick, and pull yourself together,” said Elizabeth Taylor. There’s something in that, says The Mumster

Things were shitty Chez Mumster last week and while it may sound banal, at times like that sometimes you need to count your blessings and find comfort in the small things. And for me the small things include make-up.

Few people appreciate the restorative power of a bright eyeshadow or bold lips but when the world seems a dark place, an orange eyeshadow can bring much needed cheer.

I talked here about falling in love with the Anastasia Beverly Hills Subculture Palette. It’s a rainbow selection of matte and foil colours that on first inspection looks rather scary – how on earth can you wear oranges and yellows for a daytime look without worrying you may end up looking like Cyndi Lauper? Girls might want to have fun, but they also want to look good while doing it.

But bearing this in mind, my first look tackled these citrus colours  head on – and actually they are my favourites. It’s like you have a sunrise on my face: warming and summery yet wearable enough for a cool spring day.

There is also a lovely selection of greens, purples and browns that can be used for more conventional looks. The colours are intensely pigmented and a little does indeed goes a long way – a lot comes off when you dab in your brush (they do rather stain your brushes, too) but they don’t have the best staying power. I had to bring out the big guns with the Urban Decay Eye Primer. I’m not too keen on this as I find it rather drying, but it worked and the intensity of the shades lasted all day, even during the heat.

Would I recommend the Subculture Palette? Oh yes. Absolutely. Why fade into the background just because you’re over 40? I spent far too long as a teenager trying not to be seen. Now it’s my time to shine.
