After many false starts, the Mumster knows what suits her skin – and a new discovery is helping make all the difference
If you’re one of those people who comment below articles about skincare saying how you merely wash your face with soap and water and have skin that people stop you in the street to ask about, then you carry on with what you are doing. For me, it’s your more-typical cleanse, tone and moisturise.
It’s been a case of trial and error finding what works, what doesn’t and what is simply a waste of time and money. Even when you think you’ve got it nailed your skin can change with hormones, ageing and the seasons. So this routine is what is currently working for me. It may not work for you, but it might give you some ideas and if you have any suggestions, please let us know in the comments below.
Ever since I started wearing make-up I’ve used products to remove it and moisturise. I’ve used various brands with different degrees of success. Clinique was too astringent and brought me out in cystic spots and while Vichy Normaderm helped clear them up, I like to treat my combination skin with products that don’t cause reactions as it’s more sensitive than it used to be. It’s also dehydrated, despite being shiny on my T-zone, so I also try to address that issue.
I shower everyday and use a gentle cleansing wash on my face. My favourite is the Elemis Gentle Foaming Facial Wash. It is expensive, but a little goes a long way so it lasts for ages. It also has a pleasant scent, reminiscent of playdough that I find pleasing. I wasn’t impressed when I tried Caudalie Instant Foaming Cleanser. It was rather thin and the foam didn’t hold but my daughter likes it.
Every couple of days I use an exfoliator. The Estée Lauder Revitalizing Supreme + Global Anti Ageing Refinishing Facial is nice but not amazing enough to justify the price. It has nice fine grains so isn’t too harsh, but there are other more affordable alternatives that would work just as well, such as Clarins One Step Gentle Exfoliating Cleanser.
Next I use Pai Lotus and Orange Bioaffinity Toner. Pai is a brand that I recently discovered. They are specifically designed for the needs of sensitive skin but rather than treating them all the same, they cater for the many different issues that can affect them. They are a British brand that are organic and ethical, with no parabens or SLS/SLES and offer a 90-day money-back guarantee on full-sized purchases, free shipping and sample sizes to try. Honestly, I’m not on their payroll, I just really like their products. They smell gorgeous and I don’t feel like I’m harming the environment in my desire to look good. This toner smells divine. I just need to get used to a pump spray – no matter how prepared I am I always jump! You could spray on to a cotton wool pad, but where would be the fun in that?!
I do love a serum. I’ve used them for years and I’ve tried LOADS. I’m loving my new Pai Back To Life Hydration Serum. It’s light and easily absorbed and my feels nice and plumped. I use Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Synchronized Recovery Complex Serum at night but when I finish my bottle, I’ll swap to this.
I follow with Pai Avocado And Jojoba Hydrating Day Cream on my face and Estée Lauder Day Wear Multi-Protection Anti-Oxidant 24H-Moisture Creme SPF 15 for normal and combination skin on my neck. The Estée Lauder was a gift-with-purchase but I find it too greasy for my face. On my eyes, I’m using a sample of Pai Echium And Argan Gentle Eye Cream, which is lovely but I have rather a lot of other ones to get through before I purchase a full size. I also Avene Soothing Eye Contour Cream. I’ve always used a dedicated eye cream as I have particularly sensitive eyes and face creams are too rich and make my eyes puffy.
I always finish with an Spf shield, important all year round but especially so at the moment when it’s sunny, as you can see here.
