So there I am, preparing for the “most wonderful time of the year” and it hits me – God, I’m lonely.
Now writing that, I’m really scared. I’m actually thinking of bottling this whole post. If I haven’t and you’re reading this, spare a thought for me because I’ll be sitting in a corner and worrying. Because out of the many social taboos out there, saying you’re lonely is one of the big ones.
Saying you’re lonely is the modern equivalent of walking through a busy street, ringing a bell and shouting: “Unclean. Unclean” while your leg drops off; an admittance that something is wrong, that you’re unworthy in some way because you don’t have a friend.

Last year was in many ways awful and I see no sign of that changing, but yet I still get that sense of optimism with a New Year. It’s the same in September – that “back to school” feeling that gets me looking longingly at stationery (hey, I’m a hack. My favourite press invite last year was for Paperchase. I’m getting hot just thinking about it.)
Perhaps it’s because while the world seems to be rushing to go to hell in a handcart, personally 2017 was pretty good. And as its resolution season, I’m building on that for 2018. Well hello, strangers. Yes, I know, look at the date. It’s been a crazy year. First of all I was ill throughout most of January and February. Nothing serious nor worrying, but staring at screens when I wasn’t at work just wasn’t happening. Then life went nuts with work trips and interviews with some amazing people and we started a podcast with Olly Mann… All very interesting but again, left me not wanting to stare at a screen more than I wanted to.
But now I’m back – and I’m FIFTY!!!! Yup, it happened. And it was fabulous. A weekend filled with family and friends, far too much food but loads more good cheer.
